Had a lovely afternoon with @chloevalerieart yesterday sketching and painting for #sketchacrosstheworld Here’s a little scene that was inspired by my time in the Cairngorms last month, where I would often hear wrens singing in the bushes and sometimes catch a glimpse of a dipper zooming along the river. Last Thursday, Loch Garten was as still as a mirror - a perfect reflection of the trees and hills. It could easily have been the setting for an elaborate fantasy story, and while I stood on the bank absorbing the view I couldn’t help but imagine dragons flying in the distance. I went into the hide fully prepared that all I might see would be wood mice, perhaps nothing at all. But less than three hours later I was nose to nose with a beautiful female pine marten. I couldn’t help feeling like I’d seen a unicorn; while pine martens are quite common in the Highlands, chances of ever seeing this nocturnal and elusive mustelid are low.
